Whirlpool Washer Repair (Model Coin Op) – Akron, OH

A Whirlpool coin-operated washer in Akron wouldn’t turn on at all. The customer had experienced this issue before, and we suspected an electrical problem. When we arrived, we found the GFCI outlet had tripped again — a recurring issue that needed addressing.

The Problem

The washer was completely unresponsive with no lights or sounds when the start button was pressed. This was the second time the customer had experienced this exact issue. The coin mechanism accepted quarters normally, but nothing happened when attempting to start a cycle.

Diagnosis

We checked the GFCI outlet first, given the previous history. The outlet had tripped, cutting all power to the washer. After resetting the GFCI, the washer powered up immediately and ran through a complete test cycle without issues. The repeated tripping indicates the GFCI outlet itself is likely wearing out and becoming oversensitive.

The Repair

  • Parts replaced: None required
  • Work performed: Reset tripped GFCI outlet, ran full diagnostic cycle
  • Result: Washer completed normal wash cycle, all functions operational

Is It Worth Repairing?

Coin-operated Whirlpool washers are built for heavy commercial use and typically have longer service lives than residential models. Since this was just a GFCI reset with no actual washer components failing, the unit should continue operating reliably. However, replacing that GFCI outlet soon will prevent future service calls.

Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Coin-Op Washers

  • Test GFCI outlets monthly by pressing the test/reset buttons — replace if they trip frequently without cause
  • Keep the coin mechanism clean and lubricated according to Whirlpool’s commercial service schedule
  • Check door seals regularly for wear since coin-op units see much heavier use than residential washers
