Whirlpool Washer Repair (Model WTW5000DW2) – Canton, OH

A Whirlpool top-load washer in Canton wasn’t locking properly and was spinning off-center during cycles. When we opened it up, we found a broken lid lock mechanism and a damaged hub on the wash tub — both critical components for safe, balanced operation.

The Problem

The homeowner reported that their washer wouldn’t start cycles because the lid wouldn’t lock securely. When it did manage to run, the spinning was severely off-balance, causing the machine to shake and make loud noises. The washer would sometimes stop mid-cycle with error codes related to lid detection.

Diagnosis

We removed the top panel and immediately saw the lid lock assembly had cracked plastic housing. The latch mechanism wasn’t engaging properly with the strike. Inside the tub, the hub that connects the agitator to the transmission was visibly damaged and allowing the basket to shift during spin cycles. This combination of failures created both safety issues and mechanical problems that prevented normal operation.

The Repair

  • Parts replaced: W11307244 — lid lock assembly, W10528947 — wash basket hub
  • Work performed: Removed old lid lock and installed new assembly with proper torque specifications. Lifted wash basket, replaced damaged hub, and realigned all components
  • Result: Lid locks securely on first attempt, spin cycles run smoothly without vibration or error codes

Is It Worth Repairing?

The WTW5000DW2 is a solid mid-range Whirlpool model that typically lasts 10-12 years with proper care. These particular failures — lid lock and hub — are wear items that can be expected around the 6-8 year mark. If your machine is under 8 years old and otherwise running well, this repair makes good financial sense.

Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Top-Load Washers

  • Test your lid lock monthly by gently pressing down while starting a cycle — it should engage with a solid click
  • Keep the lid lock strike area clean of detergent buildup, which can prevent proper engagement on Whirlpool models
  • Run the washer’s Clean Washer cycle monthly to prevent residue from affecting mechanical components like the hub
