A customer in Malvern, OH returned from their winter away to find their LG refrigerator icemaker no longer producing ice. While they were away from Lake Mohawk for the winter with their water off, they unfortunately did not turn the icemaker off, and when they returned it no longer produced ice despite humming sounds.
The Problem
While we away from Lake Mohawk for the winter, our water was off in our house. Unfortunately, we did not turn the icemaker in the fridge off. When we returned it no longer produced ice. We can hear it humming but nothing happens.
Diagnosis
Ice maker has power. Upon holding the reset button, you can hear the motor turning but the paddles don’t move. This is a clear sign of a faulty ice maker.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: 5989JA0002N — Ice Maker
- Work performed: Installed new icemaker
- Result: After installing the new icemaker, it appears to be cycling correctly. Issue has been resolved.
Is It Worth Repairing?
LG refrigerators are generally well-built appliances that can last 10-15 years with proper maintenance. An icemaker replacement on a functioning refrigerator is typically worthwhile, especially when the main cooling system is working properly. This refrigerator repair addresses a specific component failure without affecting the overall appliance lifespan.
Maintenance Tips for LG Refrigerators
- Turn off the icemaker when shutting off water supply to prevent motor damage from dry cycling
- Replace the LG water filter every 6 months to maintain proper water flow to the icemaker
- Keep the refrigerator temperature between 37-40°F for optimal icemaker performance
