A customer in Uniontown called with an LG washer displaying the dreaded OE error code. The machine was running rough during drain cycles and leaving water standing in the tub. After checking the obvious culprits — drain hose and pump filter — we found the real problem was a failed drain pump motor.
The Problem
The LG WM2301H washer would start its wash cycle normally but struggled when it came time to drain. The OE error code appeared consistently, and you could hear the machine working harder than usual during what should have been the drain phase. Even after the customer cleared the pump filter and checked for drain blockages, water remained standing in the drum.
Diagnosis
Our diagnostic process confirmed the OE error wasn’t related to external drainage issues. The pump filter was clean, and the drain hose showed no obstructions or kinks. However, when we tested the drain pump assembly, we found correct voltage reaching the motor but no actual water movement. The impeller was making noise but generating weak flow — classic signs of internal pump motor failure in this LG model.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: 4681EA2001T — drain pump motor assembly
- Work performed: Removed old pump assembly, installed new motor unit, reconnected electrical connections and drain lines
- Result: Full drain cycle completed without error codes, smooth and quiet operation restored
Is It Worth Repairing?
The WM2301H is a solid mid-range LG front-loader from their reliable generation of washers. These units typically see 12-15 years of service life with proper care, so a drain pump replacement on a machine this age makes good financial sense. LG drain pumps in this series are well-engineered and the replacement should provide years of trouble-free operation.
Maintenance Tips for LG Front-Load Washers
- Run LG’s Tub Clean cycle monthly using the designated setting — this model has specific wash action designed for cleaning
- Check and clean the drain pump filter every 6-8 weeks, especially if you wash heavily soiled items or pet bedding
- Use only HE detergent and measure carefully — LG’s wash algorithms are calibrated for low-suds formulations
- Leave the door and detergent drawer slightly open between loads to prevent moisture buildup and gasket problems
