A Canton homeowner called us when their Whirlpool washer stopped filling with water completely. When we arrived, we found a dual problem: the drain hose was siphoning water back into the machine, and the inlet thermistor had failed with an error code.
The Problem
The customer reported their WTW4800BQ1 washer would not fill with water at all. They’d start a cycle, but the drum remained empty while the machine went through its motions. This left them with no way to wash clothes and a growing pile of laundry.
Diagnosis
Our inspection revealed two issues working together. The drain hose wasn’t installed with the proper air gap, causing water to siphon back out as fast as it entered. Additionally, the inlet thermistor (part WPW10683603) had failed and was throwing an error code. This thermistor monitors water temperature during the fill process — when it fails, the washer’s control board won’t allow normal filling.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WPW10683603 — inlet thermistor assembly
- Work performed: Corrected drain hose positioning to eliminate siphoning, replaced faulty thermistor
- Result: Washer fills completely and all cycles operate normally without error codes
Is It Worth Repairing?
This 2014-era Whirlpool direct-drive washer is built on a proven platform that typically runs 12-15 years with proper maintenance. The thermistor failure is common around this age, but once replaced, these units usually provide years more service. Unless you’re seeing multiple expensive component failures, repair makes sense.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Top-Load Washers
- Check that your drain hose maintains a proper air gap — it should not be pushed too far down into the standpipe
- Run a cleaning cycle monthly with Whirlpool Affresh tablets to prevent buildup in the inlet valves and thermistor housing
- Leave the lid open after cycles to air-dry the tub and prevent moisture damage to electrical components like thermistors
