What Makes Thermador Refrigerators Different
Thermador is part of BSH Group — the same parent company as Bosch and Gaggenau. That shared engineering foundation matters for diagnostics, parts access, and service. Here’s what it means in practice.
BSH Group platform — shared with Bosch and Gaggenau
Thermador refrigerators share core engineering with Bosch — sealed system architecture, control board communication protocols, and parts sourcing all run through the BSH supply chain. Our Bosch factory authorization gives us direct access to BSH technical support and OEM parts. When Thermador’s own support line is the fallback, we’re already working with the manufacturer at the same level.
Toe-kick condenser — not where you’d expect it
On Thermador Freedom Collection columns and built-ins, the condenser coils are located at the bottom in the toe-kick area — not at the top like Sub-Zero or the back like most standard refrigerators. This is the single most commonly missed service point. A toe kick enclosed by cabinetry, a rug pushed against the base, or a debris buildup in that area will cause the same EC-style compressor overworking issues. Check and clean the toe-kick condenser every 6–12 months.
Freedom Collection — modular column system
Thermador’s Freedom Collection uses separate refrigerator and freezer column units installed side by side. Each column has its own sealed system — independent compressor, evaporator, and controls. This is similar to Sub-Zero’s dual-compressor logic: when one column fails, the other continues running normally. The working column isolates the problem to the non-cooling unit. Service requires knowing which column is failing before arriving.
Service mode diagnostics
Thermador Freedom Collection units have a service mode accessible through the control panel that provides detailed fault history, sensor readings, and component test functions beyond what’s visible in the standard error code display. Factory-authorized technicians use this for precise diagnosis rather than guessing at parts. The EA150 code (ice/water communication fault) and multi-component failures in particular require service mode to diagnose correctly.
What We Diagnose
Common Thermador Refrigerator Problems
These are the calls we get on Thermador units in Stark County. The toe-kick condenser is the first thing to check on most of them. See our refrigerator repair page for general brand coverage.
Refrigerator column not cooling
Check the toe-kick condenser first — blocked airflow at the base is the #1 preventable cause. If the condenser is clear and temperatures are still rising, the issue is compressor, evaporator fan, or sealed system. Do not defrost the unit before the diagnostic. Note the error code on the display before calling.
Error code on display (E01, E02, E05, E07, E15, E20)
Thermador’s E-series codes cover sensor faults, communication failures, and compressor issues. Most can be identified and triaged at home — see the full error code reference below. Write down the code before power-cycling. If the unit is cooling normally when the code appears, the issue is often a sensor rather than a cooling failure.
Ice maker not producing ice or EA150 code
Replace the water filter first (every 6 months). EA150 is a communication error between the main control board and the ice/water system — a known Thermador fault that often requires service mode diagnosis and may involve the control module or wiring harness. Prior replacements of the ice maker or water valve don’t rule out EA150 recurring. See our ice maker repair page.
Loud noise or runs constantly
Running constantly: blocked toe-kick condenser, door gasket failure, or temperature sensor error (check for E15). Loud noise: evaporator fan blade icing, condenser fan obstruction, or compressor strain. Clean the condenser coils at the base and verify nothing is blocking the toe-kick grille before scheduling service.
Display not responding or E10 / E11 code
E10 and E11 indicate power module or display module firmware issues. Try a full power reset first: turn off at the wall or breaker for 60 seconds, then restore power. If the error returns, the power module or display module needs service. These repairs require factory-level diagnostic tools to confirm before replacing boards.
Water dispenser not working or leaking
Check the water filter first. If the filter is current: water inlet valve, frozen supply line, or dispenser switch. Leaking from the dispenser area often points to a cracked water tank or failed inlet valve. Note whether the issue started after a filter change — an incorrectly seated filter is a common cause.
Diagnostic Reference
Thermador Refrigerator Error Codes
Thermador Freedom Collection and built-in units display E-series codes on the touch panel. Write down the exact code before power-cycling — it helps narrow the diagnosis. Reset: turn off at the circuit breaker for 60 seconds, then restore power. If the code returns, service is needed.
| Code | Meaning | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| E01 | Refrigerator sensor fault or short circuit — main control board cannot communicate with one or more refrigerator sensors | Watch If unit is cooling normally, sensor replacement likely. Check wiring to sensor first. Power reset, monitor. |
| E02 | Freezer sensor fault or short circuit — main control board cannot communicate with one or more freezer sensors | Watch Same path as E01 but for freezer sensors. Check wiring, power reset. If cooling is affected: call for service. |
| E05 | Refrigerator evaporator sensor fault — sensor unreachable, possible wiring issue between evap sensor and control board | Tech Wiring check at control board connection. Sensor replacement if wiring is intact. |
| E06 | Refrigerator evaporator sensor fault (alternate code on some model years) | Tech Same diagnostic path as E05. |
| E07 | Freezer evaporator sensor fault — sensor unreachable, wiring or sensor failure | Tech Wiring check then sensor replacement. If freezer is not cooling: add condenser check before sensor work. |
| E10 | Software or firmware failure in the power module | Watch Full power reset (60 seconds off at breaker). If code returns: power module reset or replacement. Factory diagnostics required. |
| E11 | Software failure or firmware error in the display module | Watch Power reset first. If it returns and display is unresponsive: display module service. Document whether the unit is cooling before calling. |
| E15 | Refrigerator too warm — if unit is cooling as expected, this indicates a sensor error rather than a cooling failure | Watch Verify actual food temperature. If food is cold and unit is cooling normally: sensor fault. Check condenser, reset. Returns → thermistor replacement. |
| E20 | Power module and display module not communicating — most likely a wiring issue | Tech Wiring harness between modules. Power reset. Wiring repair or module replacement if connection is intact. Requires factory diagnostic access. |
| EA150 | Communication error between main control board and ice/water system — common on Freedom bottom-mount models | Tech Requires service mode diagnosis. Often control module or wiring harness — not always the ice maker itself even if ice is the symptom. Prior ice maker or valve replacement doesn’t rule this out. |

Repair vs. Replace
Is It Worth Repairing a Thermador Refrigerator?
Almost always yes. Thermador is a luxury appliance with a price tag to match — and it’s built to last accordingly.
Thermador Freedom columns start at $4,500 each. The repair math is straightforward.
A single Freedom refrigerator column starts around $4,500. A matched pair with installation runs $10,000–$14,000 or more. Even a significant repair — sealed system work, compressor, control board — comes in well below replacement. Add potential cabinet modification costs for a swap and the math almost always favors repair.
- Freedom column 5–15 years old with a first major repair? Strong repair candidate. These units are built for 15–20+ year service lives. A first sealed system or compressor repair is expected performance, not a warning sign.
- Control board or sensor failure? Almost always worth repairing. Board and sensor replacements are expensive relative to standard appliances but minor relative to a $5,000+ column replacement.
- Under Thermador warranty? Factory-authorized service keeps the warranty fully intact. Call us with your serial number and we’ll confirm coverage before scheduling.
- Multiple simultaneous failures on a very old unit? If the sealed system, control board, and multiple sensors have all failed at once on a unit 20+ years old, that’s the rare case where replacement makes sense. We’ll tell you that plainly.
We don’t sell appliances. The honest assessment comes after the diagnostic — no pressure, no upsell.
