Whirlpool Washer Repair (Model WTW5000DW2) – Hartville, OH

A Whirlpool washer in Hartville left clothes soaking wet after every cycle. The WTW5000DW2 would fill, wash, and drain normally, but the final spin wasn’t extracting water. We found a stripped drive hub that couldn’t transfer torque from the motor to the wash basket.

The Problem

The customer reported clothes coming out dripping wet at the end of every wash cycle. The washer appeared to complete all phases normally — filling, agitating, and draining — but laundry remained saturated with water. This meant either the spin cycle wasn’t working at all or wasn’t reaching proper speed.

Diagnosis

After removing the agitator and wash basket, we found the drive hub with completely stripped splines. This plastic hub connects the wash basket to the drive shaft, transferring motor torque during the spin cycle. When the splines wear down or strip out, the basket can’t engage properly with the drive system. The motor runs, but the basket either doesn’t spin or spins too slowly to extract water effectively.

The Repair

  • Parts replaced: W10528947 — drive hub assembly
  • Work performed: Removed wash basket, extracted old stripped hub, installed new hub with proper engagement
  • Result: Test cycle reached full spin speed with complete water extraction

Is It Worth Repairing?

The WTW5000DW2 is a solid mid-tier Whirlpool model that typically lasts 10-12 years with proper care. Drive hub replacement is a common repair that extends the washer’s life significantly. Unless this unit is approaching 15 years old or has other major issues, this repair makes financial sense.

Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Top-Load Washers

  • Avoid overloading — heavy, unbalanced loads put excessive stress on the drive hub and transmission
  • Use only HE detergent in proper amounts; excess suds can interfere with spin cycles and leave residue
  • Run monthly cleaning cycles with washer cleaner to prevent buildup that can affect mechanical components
  • If you hear grinding or clicking during spin, stop the cycle immediately — continued operation can damage the transmission
