A homeowner in Massillon called about their GE washer being full of water and refusing to run any cycles. When we arrived at the Sweetbriar Circle address, we found the washing machine completely locked up — it wouldn’t even attempt a rinse/drain cycle.
The Problem
The customer reported their washing machine was full of water and they weren’t sure if it had run the wash cycle or not. When they tried to run a rinse/drain cycle, the washer would not even run.
Diagnosis
A sock was sucked onto the drain pump intake, preventing it from draining. If a washer can’t drain, typically it won’t do anything else. The blockage was completely stopping water flow, which caused the machine’s safety systems to prevent any operation.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: None required
- Work performed: Accessed the drain pump by inserting a putty knife in the crack between the top of the washer and the top of the front panel, pushed the two tabs, and removed the sock from the pump intake
- Result: Washer drained properly and resumed normal operation
Is It Worth Repairing?
This GE top-load washer is from their reliable GTWN series and had a simple blockage issue rather than a component failure. Since no parts were needed and the machine is mechanically sound, it should provide many more years of service with proper maintenance.
Maintenance Tips for GE Washers
- Check pockets thoroughly before washing — small items like socks, coins, and tissues can block the drain pump
- Run a cleaning cycle monthly with GE’s recommended washer cleaner to prevent buildup
- Leave the lid open after use to allow moisture to evaporate and prevent mold growth
