A customer in Alliance called about their GE range running 25 degrees below the set temperature. They had already tried resetting per the manual, but the oven still wasn’t heating properly. Our diagnostics revealed the unit was actually cycling correctly at 350 degrees average.
The Problem
The customer reported that the temperature was off and not heating up as it should, running 25 degrees below the set point. They had attempted to reset the unit per the manual instructions but the issue persisted.
Diagnosis
We tested both bake and broil elements in both compartments — all tested good. The temperature sensors measured within specification. During extended testing, the unit cycled right at 350 degrees average for quite a while, with readings of 412, 386 during preheat, then stabilizing at 342, 339, 350ish, 346, 342, 363, and ending at 345, 369. We were unable to replicate the temperature issue the customer experienced.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: No parts replaced
- Work performed: Tested heating elements and temperature sensors, monitored temperature cycling
- Result: Unit performed within normal parameters during our testing
Is It Worth Repairing?
GE ranges are generally reliable appliances, and this particular model shows good build quality. Since no actual malfunction was found during testing and all components checked out within specifications, this unit should continue to provide years of service. Temperature variations can sometimes be user perception or related to cookware and food placement.
Maintenance Tips for GE Ranges
- Use an oven thermometer to verify temperature accuracy — GE ovens typically cycle within 25 degrees of set point
- Keep oven vents clear and ensure proper air circulation around the range
- Clean temperature sensors gently with a damp cloth — avoid harsh chemicals that could affect calibration
