A customer in Salem, OH called about their GE washer that was overfilling and wouldn’t spin. After draining the excess water, we discovered a failed transmission that couldn’t shift from wash to spin cycle, plus a faulty pressure sensor causing the overflow.
The Problem
The customer reported that their washer had overfilled with water. They were able to drain it but it would not spin. The machine was stuck in wash mode and unable to complete its cycle.
Diagnosis
The transmission had failed and was not shifting from wash to spin. Additionally, the pressure sensor was out of spec and the machine was overflowing. This dual failure meant the washer couldn’t properly control water levels or advance through its cycle phases.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WH38X10019 — mode shifter transmission assembly, WH12X10479 — pressure sensor switch, WE01X20380 — pressure sensor knob
- Work performed: Replaced the transmission assembly and pressure sensor components
- Result: Verified proper fill settings on the lowest and highest water level settings as well as the wash and spin function
Is It Worth Repairing?
GE top-load washers from this era are generally reliable machines, but transmission failures are expensive repairs. This model was worth fixing given the major component replacement, but similar transmission issues in older GE washers may warrant replacement consideration depending on the unit’s overall condition and age.
Maintenance Tips for GE Washers
- Check and clean the pressure sensor tube quarterly to prevent water level sensing issues
- Use proper detergent amounts — excess suds can strain GE transmission systems
- Distribute loads evenly to reduce stress on the transmission during spin cycles
