A customer in East Canton called about their GE oven not preheating properly. When we arrived, testing revealed failed heating elements — both the bake element and a surface burner element had lost continuity and needed replacement.
The Problem
The oven wouldn’t reach the set temperature during preheating, making cooking impossible. Additionally, one of the surface burners had stopped working entirely. The customer noticed the oven taking much longer than usual to heat up before it stopped heating altogether.
Diagnosis
We tested both the bake element and surface burner elements for electrical continuity. The bake element showed an open circuit, meaning it could no longer conduct electricity to generate heat. The surface burner element also failed the continuity test. These heating elements develop breaks in their internal coils over time, especially with regular use and thermal cycling.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WB44T10010 — range oven bake element, WB30T10047 — 6-inch surface burner element
- Work performed: Removed old elements, installed new bake and surface burner elements, secured all connections
- Result: Oven preheated to 350°F in normal time, surface burner heated evenly across the element
Is It Worth Repairing?
This GE model JBP64B0B4WH is a solid electric range that typically lasts 15-20 years with proper care. Element replacement is one of the most common and cost-effective repairs for these units. Unless the range is showing multiple system failures or the control board has issues, replacing heating elements usually makes good financial sense.
Maintenance Tips for GE Electric Ranges
- Avoid using oversized cookware that extends beyond the burner elements — this causes uneven heating and premature element failure
- Clean spills from burner drip pans promptly to prevent corrosion that can damage element connections
- Check that oven racks slide smoothly and don’t scrape against the bake element during insertion
