A customer on Southpointe Circle NE in Canton called about their Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling properly after returning from Florida. The freezer was still working fine, but the main compartment had lost its cooling power. We found the evaporator fan barely functioning and a defrost sensor completely encased in ice.
The Problem
The refrigerator was not cooling when the customers returned from Florida. The icemaker had also quit working sometime before that. The freezer section was still functioning normally.
Diagnosis
The evaporator fan was basically not functioning, rotating very, very slowly. The defrost sensor was encapsulated in ice. It was clear that the unit had been defrosting, but not completely. The evaporator had a good frost pattern and the cooling system itself seemed to be good, but the unit needed a new fan and a new defrost sensor.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WPW10464673 — Evap fan motor, WPW10384183 — Sensor
- Work performed: Replaced fan and defrost sensor, cleared frost and ice from evaporator
- Result: Good to go
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Whirlpool WRF560SEHZ00 is a quality side-by-side refrigerator that’s built to last. When the cooling system itself is good and only support components like the fan motor and defrost sensor need replacement, it’s typically a worthwhile repair. These parts failures are common wear items that don’t indicate broader system problems.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Refrigerators
- Keep condenser coils clean — vacuum them every 6 months to prevent overheating
- Check door seals regularly and clean any food debris that prevents proper sealing
- Don’t block air vents inside the refrigerator or freezer compartments
