A Samsung refrigerator at a home on Sand Run Road in Akron wasn’t staying cold, leaving the family with spoiling food. When we opened up the freezer section, we found the evaporator coil completely iced over, blocking the fan from circulating air through the system.
The Problem
The customer reported that their refrigerator does not stay cold. Food in both the fresh food and freezer compartments was warming up, creating an urgent situation that needed immediate attention.
Diagnosis
The evaporator had ice built up that was keeping the fan from spinning. This ice blockage prevented proper air circulation throughout the refrigerator, causing temperatures to rise in both compartments. The buildup indicated failures in the defrost system components that normally prevent this type of ice accumulation.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: DA97-08724N evaporator cover assembly, DA32-00029A defrost termination sensor, DA47-00322J defrost heater, DA82-01415A water leakage assembly (drain kit)
- Work performed: Replaced the evaporator cover, defrost heater, defrost termination sensor and installed the drain kit
- Result: Ice blockage cleared, fan spinning freely, proper cooling restored to both compartments
Is It Worth Repairing?
Samsung refrigerators from this era are generally reliable appliances worth repairing, especially for defrost system issues like this one. The RS265TDRS model is a solid side-by-side design that should provide many more years of service once the defrost components are properly functioning. This type of repair typically extends the appliance’s life significantly.
Maintenance Tips for Samsung Refrigerators
- Keep the condenser coils clean underneath or behind the unit — Samsung recommends every 6 months for optimal cooling efficiency
- Check door seals regularly on Samsung side-by-side models, as worn gaskets can cause the defrost system to work overtime
- Replace the water filter every 6 months to prevent drainage issues that can affect the defrost cycle
