We recently completed a dryer repair on Kramer Street Northeast in Hartville, OH for a Speed Queen ADGE8RGS113TW01 that was making grinding noise at startup. The drum grinding would fade after a couple minutes of operation, pointing to worn drive components that needed immediate attention.
The Problem
When it first starts up drum makes grinding noise. This fades in a couple minutes. The customer was experiencing the classic symptoms of worn drum support components that create friction during the initial startup phase before settling into normal operation.
Diagnosis
Upon inspection, we found multiple worn drive components causing the grinding noise. The idler pulley, support rollers, belt, and front drum slides all showed signs of wear and needed replacement. Additionally, significant lint buildup throughout the dryer cabinet was contributing to the mechanical stress on these components.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: 2x 56461P (SHAFT, WHEEL), 1x D519214 (dryer maintenance kit)
- Work performed: Replaced idler pulley, support rollers, belt, and front drum slides. Cleaned all the lint from the dryer cabinet.
- Result: Unit is good to go.
Is It Worth Repairing?
Speed Queen dryers are built for commercial-grade durability and designed to last decades with proper maintenance. This model represents excellent value for repair investment, as these units typically outlast most residential dryers by years. The drive components we replaced are standard wear items that, once refreshed, should provide many more years of reliable service.
Maintenance Tips for Speed Queen Dryers
- Clean the lint filter after every load and vacuum around the filter housing monthly to prevent buildup in the cabinet
- Have the entire lint path professionally cleaned annually, including the exhaust vent and internal cabinet areas
- Listen for changes in operating sounds — Speed Queen dryers run quietly when properly maintained, so new noises indicate component wear
