A Whirlpool dishwasher on Maplegrove Street in Louisville wouldn’t latch properly and refused to start. The customer was convinced the door latch had failed, but when I pulled the unit out to check the mechanism, I found the real problem was much simpler — a loose mounting screw had thrown off the door alignment.
The Problem
The homeowner called because their dishwasher door wouldn’t close securely and the unit wouldn’t run. They could push the door shut, but it wouldn’t click into the latched position that signals the control board to start a cycle. The safety interlock was doing its job — preventing operation with an improperly sealed door.
Diagnosis
I pulled the dishwasher forward to access the mounting points and immediately spotted the issue. The upper mounting screw that secures the unit to the underside of the countertop had backed out almost completely. This allowed the dishwasher to sag slightly, throwing off the door alignment just enough to prevent proper latching. The latch mechanism itself was working perfectly — just misaligned by about an eighth of an inch.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: None required
- Work performed: Reinstalled and tightened the loose upper mounting screw to factory torque spec
- Result: Door latches solidly and dishwasher operates normally through all cycles
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Whirlpool dishwasher had plenty of life left — the issue was purely mechanical, not a component failure. Whirlpool builds solid dishwashers that typically run 10-15 years with proper maintenance. A loose mounting screw is normal wear that happens as houses settle and vibration gradually works fasteners loose over time. This unit was maybe 6 years old and worth keeping.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Dishwashers
- Check the upper mounting screws annually — they’re accessible by opening the door and looking up at the countertop brackets. Whirlpool units are particularly prone to this as they run more cycles than most brands.
- Clean the door gasket monthly with a damp cloth to prevent soap buildup that can interfere with proper sealing, especially around the bottom seal where food particles collect.
- Run Whirlpool’s monthly cleaning cycle with their affresh dishwasher cleaner to prevent mineral deposits in the wash arms — Louisville’s hard water makes this especially important.
