A customer in Malvern called about their LG washer displaying an OE error and refusing to drain. Water sat in the tub after every cycle, leaving clothes soaking wet. Our diagnosis revealed a failed drain pump combined with a control board that wasn’t sending power to the pump.
The Problem
The washer would fill and agitate normally but stopped dead when it came time to drain. The OE error code appeared consistently, and water remained standing in the tub. The customer had to manually bail out water before removing clothes, turning laundry day into a frustrating chore.
Diagnosis
Testing revealed the drain pump was completely silent when the washer attempted to drain. Using a multimeter, we found the main control board wasn’t sending voltage to the pump during the drain cycle. This dual failure — a dead pump and a control board that couldn’t command it anyway — explained why the washer was stuck with standing water after every wash.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: 5859EA1004F drain pump assembly, EBR75857902 main control board PCB assembly
- Work performed: Removed old pump from bottom of tub, disconnected control board wiring harness, installed new components
- Result: Test cycle completed full drain in under 3 minutes with no error codes
Is It Worth Repairing?
This WT1101CW is a solid mid-range LG top-loader from their reliable lineup. At around 8-10 years old, these units typically have plenty of service life remaining after major component replacement. The combination repair addresses the two most common failure points, making it a worthwhile investment compared to replacement.
Maintenance Tips for LG Top-Load Washers
- Run LG’s tub clean cycle monthly with washer cleaner — Stark County’s hard water accelerates mineral buildup
- Check and clean the drain pump filter every 3 months to prevent clogs that overwork the pump
- Balance large items like comforters across the tub to reduce stress on the drive system and pump
