We responded to a service call on Mc Call Road in Garrettsville, OH for a Whirlpool washer with an agitator not working. What appeared to be a mechanical failure turned out to be a water supply issue affecting the entire home’s plumbing system.
The Problem
The customer reported that the agitator was not working on their Whirlpool washer. The unit would not progress into the wash cycle, leaving clothes sitting in standing water without the agitation needed for proper cleaning.
Diagnosis
The cc unit was not functioning and wouldn’t progress into wash. We found an F8E1 error code stored in the system. Manual testing seemed fine, and the unit went through auto test without issues. However, when we ran it for a while with the water valves on, it started out with good flow, but shortly into the test, the cold water supply petered out. The hot water seemed to be fine the entire time. We verified poor cold water flow to the laundry sink and kitchen sink as well.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: No parts replaced
- Work performed: Diagnostic testing confirmed washer functions all test good
- Result: The water supply issue will need to be resolved to properly use the washing machine
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Whirlpool RTW4516FW2 is a solid top-load washer that’s built to last. Since the washer itself tested perfectly and no parts were needed, the issue lies with the home’s plumbing system rather than the appliance. Once the cold water supply problem is addressed by a plumber, this washer should provide many more years of reliable service.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Washers
- Check water supply hoses annually for cracks, bulges, or mineral buildup that could restrict flow
- Clean the lint filter in the agitator (if equipped) monthly to prevent drainage issues
- Run a cleaning cycle with washer cleaner every 3 months to prevent odor and buildup in top-load models
