GE Washer Repair – Alliance, OH (GUD27ESSM1WW)

A GE washer on Lambert Street in Alliance, OH was throwing an F9 error code and wouldn’t start new loads because the lid latch wouldn’t reset after washing. The customer had already replaced the lid latch and electronic control board with no success, but we found the real culprit was a shorted reed switch in the lid assembly.

The Problem

The customer reported that after each wash cycle completed, the lid latch would remain engaged and wouldn’t release. This prevented starting any new loads, and the washer was displaying an F9 error code. They had already invested in replacing both the lid latch mechanism and the main electronic control board, but the problem persisted.

Diagnosis

The F9 code on this GE model indicates “Lid Switch Redundancy” — meaning the washer’s control system detected conflicting signals from the lid safety switches. When we tested the lid assembly, we found the reed switch was internally shorted. This small magnetic switch is what tells the control board whether the lid is truly closed and latched. With it shorted, the control system couldn’t get a reliable reading and locked out the washer as a safety precaution.

The Repair

  • Parts replaced: WH19X27244 — Reed switch
  • Work performed: Removed lid assembly, replaced faulty reed switch, tested all lid safety functions
  • Result: F9 code cleared, lid latch cycles properly, washer starts and completes cycles normally

Is It Worth Repairing?

This GE model is a reliable top-loader that’s worth keeping running. The reed switch failure is relatively common on these units as they age, but once replaced, the lid system typically runs trouble-free for years. At around 8-10 years old, this washer still has plenty of useful life remaining.

Maintenance Tips for GE Washers

  • Keep the lid area clean and free of detergent buildup that can interfere with proper latch operation
  • Don’t slam the lid — the reed switches are sensitive to impact damage
  • If you notice the lid not latching smoothly, address it early before the switches fail completely
