GE Washer Repair – Canton, OH (GTW685BSL1W3)

A GE top-load washer on Holt St SE in Canton wasn’t completing its spin cycle. We diagnosed multiple fault codes and discovered the drive system was heavily saturated in grease from a failing transmission seal.

The Problem

The customer reported that the spin cycle doesn’t work. The washer would fill and agitate normally but wouldn’t spin out the water from clothes.

Diagnosis

We diagnosed the GE top-load washer (GTW685BSL1WS) and found multiple stored fault codes including F3 (Locked Rotor Monitor), F31/F26 (Out of Balance), F10 (Mode Shift), and F27 (Water Accessibility). SmartHQ showed Motor TCO Trip and Belt Loss alerts. Inspection revealed belt and drive/transmission pulleys heavily saturated in grease, consistent with a failing transmission seal contaminating the drive system. All loads tests otherwise ran normal.

The Repair

  • Parts replaced: WH01X24180 — Drive Belt, WH03X32217 — 1/2 HP Motor Pulley & Nut, WH03X32097 — Transmission Pulley & Nut
  • Work performed: Applied available firmware updates (Washer Main Board Application and Parametric payloads) and cleared stored fault codes. Replaced transmission pulley, motor pulley, and belt.
  • Result: Good to go.

Is It Worth Repairing?

GE top-load washers from this era are generally solid machines worth repairing when the issue is drive system components like pulleys and belts. These parts are relatively affordable and the repair typically extends the washer’s life significantly compared to replacement cost.

Maintenance Tips for GE Top-Load Washers

  • Use HE detergent only — regular detergent creates excess suds that stress the drive system
  • Don’t overload the tub — GE’s load sensing works best with properly sized loads
  • Leave the lid open after cycles to air-dry and prevent moisture buildup around seals
